NVIDIA 680i SLI: Official 1333MHz FSB CPU Support Arrives

Date: July 20th, 2007
By Gary Key

Intel's P35 chipset was recently introduced amid gala fanfare with "official" support for the upcoming 45nm based Penryn products and the newly arrived 1333MHz FSB based processors . While the spotlight has been on Intel's latest chipset for the past few weeks, we kept hearing whispers from the guys in green wondering what all the fuss was about. After all, they told us bluntly, we have a chipset that has been in the market for almost nine months now that fully supports the same features that everyone got excited about when the blue team rolled into Computex 2007 with sirens blazing.

SETI NEWS:

8 Aug 2007 22:37:26 UTC

Yesterday afternoon we were visited by many students who work with Dan Werthimer on the CASPER project. We made them analyze all the dozens of random server pieces (cases, motherboards, memory, disks, CPUs, power supplies...) that have been recently donated and try to assemble them into useful machines. They ultimately were able to only get one fully working system, and even that had only half a case. We'll probably use that system as a CASPER dedicated web server. Among these students was Daniel who is off to grad school soon so we're finally revisiting the work he did with us on web-based skymaps. We don't want that effort to go to waste (this side project languished as all parties got too busy with other things).

The database eventually recovered after we tweaked the right parameter. We were back in business by the end of the day, except one of the assimilators is still failing on a particular record in the database (one we'll probably end up needing to delete) and we still haven't been able to build up a results-to-send queue.

Jeff returned today and we all tackled getting the new multibeam client out. So the Windows version has been released, in case you haven't noticed. A Linux version, and a working Mac version (should be recompiled eventually) are also available. This client will chew on classic work until multibeam data becomes available. Speaking of that, Jeff and I are working on the splitter now. We actually fired one up, and a few hundred multibeam workunits went out to the public, but we're still doing work on the automation backend and otherwise, so don't expect a flood of new work just yet. Besides, we really should get the formal press release in order before we dive all the way into the new data. In any event: Woo-hoo!!

Project of the Month: -DrBob

SETI.USA encourages its members to participate in the project of their choice. Now that we have accomplished the team's original goal of being #1 in SETI@home credit in ALL BOINC projects is valuable to the team's future success.

Some members have asked for direction as to which projects they should allocate their resources to. Therefore we have decided to designate a “Team Project of the Month”. The chosen project typically will be one in which our team currently has a poor showing in that projects standings.

Rosetta@home has been chosen for the Team Project of the Month for August/September.

Our team is currently ranked 8th in BOINC standings on the project and we are hoping enough members will participate in this project to improve our position there by September 19th.
