Additionally, we have achieved some significant milestones in many of the individual projects. We currently have:

6 projects with 100+ Million credits
11 with 50+ Million
16 with 25+ Million
23 with 10+ Million

Also, SETI.USA is one of the top 10 teams in 78 projects, including being the #1 team in 22 projects. We are the #1 team in the world in both of these categories!

Quote of the Month:

The consequences of scientific illiteracy are far more dangerous in our time than in any that has come before.

Winter Soltice Challenge  -

Prime Grid - http://www.primegrid.com/ Is hosting The Winter Solstice Challenge.

The challenge will begin 18 December 2009 17:47 UTC and end 21 December 2009 17:47 UTC.

We invite you to attach to Prime Grid and join the Members of Team SETI.USA for the Prime Grid Winter Solstice Challenge. Prime Grid is a well run project that is always up & always has work.  PG works and plays well with other BOINC Projects, and gives good CPU credits.  AP26, the project for this challenge, pays the best on most systems.

Prime Grid (PG) has several sub-projects that one must select (or can select) in the User management screen (under Resource share and graphics PrimeGrid preferences). This is a short duration challenge (3 days) and is for the AP26 Project only.

More information is available at the following link: http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=1562&nowrap=true#19750

Only work downloaded after the start of the challenge will count toward the team totals.  Therefore it is imperative that you do one of the following:

1.  If you are not going to run the project before the start date, then be sure you attach after 17:47 UTC on the 18th.

2. If you are already running the project then you MUST do a reset after 17:47 UTC on the 18th.  This will insure that all of your downloaded work counts for us.

Another thread on PG is here: http://www.setiusa.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15169  Where you will see some of the Team Members who activly participatie in Prime Grid.

The project also now supports Cuda video cards!  So if you have any Cuda cards you can also put them on the challenge.  For help in setting up your Cuda enabled cards (NVidia cards) please visit the thread link immediately above or check out the last article for instructions.

Recruiting Contest  -SargeD

NOTE: This contest is still running!

In an attempt to increase our teams crunching strength I am going to sponsor a recruiting contest.  The contest will run from now through December 31, 2009.  The team member who recruits the most new members to active crunching will be declared the winner.

Contest Rules:

1.  Active crunching is defined as having at least one computer crunching on any BOINC project for team SETI.USA.
2.  Inactive members who can be talked into coming back to crunching will also be counted as a new member for the purposes of this contest.
3.  Each recruiter is responsible for reporting their new recruits by username to SargeD, either by e-mail or PM.
4.  All new recruits must be reported by midnight (Central Time) on December 31, 2009 to count for the contest.
5.  The winner will be announced in the January issue of our newsletter.

The Prize:

The winner will get both of my computers crunching under their account for a period of one month.  The specs for the two computers are as follows:

SH-Cluster1 - C2D E5200 @ 2.5 GHz, with 2 ATI HD 4850 GPUs
SH-Cluster2 - C2D E6300 @ 2.0 GHz, with 1 NVidia 8600GT GPU (This GPU will most likely be upgraded to a much faster one.)

These two computers should add between 4 and 5 million to the winners account during the one month period (assuming that at least one of the GPU projects is active during that time).  So lets get out there and recruit and may the best recruiter win!

Setting up Cuda -

1. Make sure you have a CUDA capable GPU in your system with at least 256MB video RAM. CUDA works with NVIDIA GPUs from the 8xxx series onwards, including GeForce, Quadro and the Tesla line.
(Note: some projects may have a minimum GPU version requirement.)

2. Install the latest drivers from NVIDIA, the CUDA driver is included in recent versions (177.35 and above).

3. You will need to have a “CUDA aware” BOINC client installed (BOINC 6.4.5 or higher. Recomend 6.6.36 or higher).

4. Attach to a project that has a CUDA application.
