Supporting SETI@Home and all BOINC Distributed Computing Projects The newsletter staff and leadership of Team SETI.USA want to thank all of our members for their efforts in 2009. We are now moving into a new year and we hope to see 2010 as another year of fantastic milestones. We want to continue to climb the charts in some projects while holding our number 1s where we can. By moving to the top of the ranks, we now have a bulls eye on our backs and other teams are pushing to bring us down. Lets pull together as a team and show them that we have what it takes to stay at the top.

SETI.USA has accomplished some amazing milestones as a team. We currently have over 5.2 Billion credits (5.22 Billion as of 11 February 2010). This past month, we passed 100 million in PrimeGrid and 5 million in NFS@Home. Awesome crunching, team! Additionally, we have achieved some significant milestones in many of the individual projects. We currently have: 8 projects with 100+ Million
credits Also, SETI.USA is one of the top 10 teams in 79 projects, including being the #1 team in 23 projects. We are the #1 team in the world in both of these categories! To see how we are doing in individual projects, please see the attached spreadsheet. Keep on crunching! Go SETI.USA!!!

Thank you, SargeD!!! It is with much regret that we have to announce that our good friend SargeD is resigning from his position as Editor of the SETI.USA newsletter. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, he will be stepping down from his editorial position effective next month. This will be the last newsletter he publishes. SargeD has been a fixture on the SETI.USA team, and a true leader. He has been active on our message boards nearly four years now, and has been working with the newsletter since its inception in November of 2006. Additionally, he provides helpful advice and guidance to our members, and is a true leader on our team. We will certainly miss SargeD as editor, and wish him all the best with his health issues. He will remain active on the message boards, and we are all thankful for that. Good luck Sarge, and thank you for everything!

Do you have or would you like to write an article for our newsletter? We are always looking for new material of interest to our members. If you have something you would like to submit, go here and post it. |
Quote of the Month: The fact
that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is
not totally absurd.

Team Focus Project - MilkyWay@Home - Top Viking It began with Greetings & Salutations & normally ends with the now familiar “Thank you for supporting the “Team Focus Project - MilkyWay@Home”. The Team is having great success in Project Milky Way. We are now Number One in Total Team Credit and Milky Way has become the Team's Number One Project in Total Team Production. We have staged a major come back in Project MilkyWay@Home. Starting from a deficit of 120 Million and the threat of slipping into 3rd place, to a position at the beginning of the Team Focus Project, where we were 64 Million below L'Alliance Francophone and in 2nd place overall in Project Milky Way. These were the standings when we started the "Team Focus Project - MilkyWay@Home" Posted: Sat Dec 26, 2009 10:33 PM P - Total
Credit - - - Team These are the Current Standings (as of 12 February 2010) P - Total
Credit - - - Team Just under 500 Million MilkyWay Credits were added during the Team Focus Project. 476,066,942 in 46 Days. Over 10 Million Milkstones Per Day. Our Project MilkyWay BOINCStats RAC = 10,208,802. The Keys to Our Success Many factors have contributed to our success, most importantly is the enthusiastic support given to the project by hundreds of Team Members. Our average “Users Returning Work” is 163 Team Members daily. We have also added 152 New Team Members for Project Milky Way since the Team Focus Project began. The Team currently have 340 Members who are active in MilkyWay. We have 10 Team Members who are in the Top 100 for the project. We have 6 Team Members in the Top 50 overall. We have 62 Team Members with over 1 Million Credits in Milky Way. We have 22 Team Members with over 10 Million credits. We have 103 Team Members over 250 Thousand credits. Other important variables include the ability of our members to “crunch” this projects using CPU with Optimized Applications for Windows, MAC & Linux, and GPU 'crunching” with both ATI & Nvidia cards. So everyone on the Team can “crunch” Milky Way, without regard to the type of processor they have and on all common Operating Systems. Some server side updates and improvements were added shortly after the “Focus” began and the Milky Way server was improved and has been stable during the last 6-weeks, with only a few brief outages. Many members helped Team members with the set up and optimization for this project. The Team Focus Thread contains many messages and help files and recommendations for optimizing specific systems for the project. The response has been outstanding and the help and support provided by our fellow Team Members was critical in making this a success. Critical to the implementation of any good plan, is having a good plan to implement. Several team members worked to develop a good “Team Strategy”. First and foremost is Bryan who suggested the “Two Prong Strategy”. This strategy allowed the team to regain our position as the World Number One Team and to take Number One in Milky Way at the same time. We have accomplished both of these goals and are out producing all other teams in BOINC & MilkyWay. We continue to increase our lead and are now positioned to maintain our lead with continued focus on MilkyWay. Our lead allows us to participate and win the 2010 Prime Grid Challenge Series and to develop other strategies that will keep on the top of the world. The concept of “The Team Focus Project” (TFP) has been discussed and accepted by the team, with another Team Focus Project for FreeHAL running now and with new and exciting Team Focus Projects being discussed for the future. 2010 looks like a great year for Team SETI.USA. We look forward to continued success in Project MilkyWay@Home and the Team Focus Projects to come. Thank you for supporting the “Team Focus Project – MilkyWay@Home”.

Introduction to FreeHAL@Home -Maxwell As you can probably surmise, FreeHAL@Home is one of the many dozens of distributed computing projects utilizing the BOINC platform. However, two things make FreeHAL unique among BOINC projects:1. It is the only project focusing on artificial intelligence research (see the FreeHAL website for further details on the science of this project)2. It is the only project that runs primarily on RAM instead of the CPU.Regarding the second point, this means that you can crunch FreeHAL while still crunching your favorite project. It also means that ANY computer can run FreeHAL. Performance is not dependent on the speed of your processor. You merely choose the number of work units to run based on the available RAM you have on your computer. Again, any computer has the ability to run FreeHAL. All you have to do is attach and let it run.Another fun aspect is that you can consider FreeHAL to provide "free credits." For those of you who are interested in the BOINC credits in addition to the science of the projects, FreeHAL will provide a substantial boost to the number of credits your machine(s) can complete in a single day. Credits come from utilizing RAM, not the CPU (like nearly every other BOINC project).SETI.USA is currently making a push to become the #1 team in FreeHAL; as such, we are asking for your help and encourage everyone to get involved. To join the project, please go to the following url: http://freehal.net/freehal_at_home/. For more information on how to get started with FreeHAL, please see the following thread on our forums: http://www.setiusa.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15940
