SETI NEWS: -SargeD

The first three dishes of the Allen Telescope Array in northern California. Soon the first 42 dishes should start a SETI survey of the Milky Way's plane near the galactic center. Eventually a tightly linked array of 350 dishes should be listening to the stars.         Courtesy SETI Institute.

The next generation of big radio telescopes won't look anything like today's massive dishes. Instead of giant steel constructions towering into the sky, the future will belong to more economical arrays of many small antennas hugging the ground. And, in a historic role reversal, searchers for extraterrestrial intelligence are blazing a trail for conventional radio astronomy to follow.

That is the vision behind the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) , formerly named the One Hectare Telescope — the world's first large radio observatory devoted primarily to SETI. The SETI Institute and the University of California at Berkeley's Radio Astronomy Lab are building an array that, with sufficient funding, should eventually include 350 dishes, having a total collecting area of about 10,000 square meters (one hectare, or 2.47 acres). The Allen Telescope Array is currently under construction and beginning operations at Berkeley's Hat Creek radio observatory site in northern California. The instrument will be used for ordinary radio astronomy at the same time as it performs its SETI work.

It´s time again to meet a fellow cruncher on the team. This month we have picked a person who  is always willing to help, when you encounter a problem.   And that has earned him the status of admin on our MB. In fact one could call him Dr. Watson, as he is that good at spotting problems. I am pleased to introduce.......

DrBob!

Project of the Month: -DrBob

SETI.USA encourages its members to participate in the project of their choice. Now that we have accomplished the team's original goal of being #1 in SETI@home credit in ALL BOINC projects is valuable to the team's future success.

Some members have asked for direction as to which projects they should allocate their resources to. Therefore we have decided to designate a “Team Project of the Month”. The chosen project typically will be one in which our team currently has a poor showing in that projects standings.

Rectilinear Crossing Number has been chosen for the Team Project of the Month for June.

Our team is currently ranked 14th in BOINC standings on the project and we are hoping enough members will participate in this project to improve our position there by July 15th.

Rectilinear Crossing Number was originally nominated by teratoma for a Weekend Crunch-a-thon. After reviewing his entry and the current standings on the project we felt it would make a great Project Of The Month.
Thank you teratoma.

Crunch-a-thon: -SargeD

Team SETI.USA held a weekend crunch-a-thon on project Riesel Sieve that ran from June 9 at 00:00 UTC until June 12 at 00:00 UTC. We had a really good turn out in both number of members and number of machines and a lot of science was accomplished. The project admins, on hearing of the event, went out of their way to ensure things went as smooth as possible by making sure there was a sufficient number of work units available. They also tweaked their validation times to make sure that all credit was awarded as soon as possible.

Computer of the Month:

This month's computer of the month belongs to DrBob. It is an amazing piece of work and is in reality a homemade rackmount containing multiple crunchers. DrBob provides us an outstanding walk through of his "Tower of Power", so please click the below link and check it out.

Quote of the Month June:

A page from a journal of modern experimental physics will be as mysterious to the uninitiated as a Tibetan mandala. Both are records of inquiries into the nature of the universe.

Team News: -SargeD

The SETI.USA Spring Intra-Team race was kicked off on Thursday May 3, 2007 at 00:00 UTC. There were 25 participants divided into 2 teams, The RAC Assassins and SUSAnne's Redlight Special. The race started off smoothly with the main tactic seeming to be who sandbagged the most before the start. The RAC Assassins jumped off to an early lead thanks to the efforts of Kevint. Things started going downhill after the first week when the BIG Berk happened. Participants were forced to babysit their crunchers almost constantly to keep things going because of the Berkeley issues. Despite the berk, The RAC Assassins crossed the finish line first and took the coveted gold medal. Congrats go out to the members of The RAC Assassins for an oustanding performance!

User of The Day -SargeD

Seeing as how we are a bunch of credit mongers and stats hounds, I have decided to add another set of stats to the newsletter for everyone to drool over. The User of The Day has become a point of interest for many of us and we have recently started trying to move up their stats charts. Currently we are in a solid 10th place but have been moving up on the #9 Belgium. In the past week we have added 9 UoTDs to their measley 4. Let's keep the pressure on and take that number 9 spot away from them!
