Welcome Top Viking
Written By Maxwell - March 2010 Edition
Welcome, Top Viking!

SETI.USA would like to welcome Top Viking to the position of Editor In Chief of the newsletter. After the resignation of our former editor, SargeD, last month, Top Viking has generously offered his services as EIC. For that, we thank him!

Top Viking has already brought many new ideas to the newsletter and has infused the staff with a new sense of purpose. For example, many of the stylistic and content changes you are seeing in the newsletter were the idea of Top Viking. We are excited to see the newsletter develop under his leadership!

Thank you, Top Viking, and welcome to the position!

IMDb - The Internet Movie Database

IMDb: How can one ever settle bar bets about movies, stars, costars, directors, dates, and films without detailed information in the Internet Movie Database? Using the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) is free for non-commercial use.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is a HUGE collection of movie information. We try to catalog every pertinent detail about a movie, from who was in it, to who made it, to trivia about it, to filming locations, and even where you can find reviews and fan sites on the web. We then do our best to present this information in a manner that is easy to search and access.

The IMDb started as a hobby project by an international group of movie fans (see history), essentially something by movie fans for movie fans. And despite our incredible growth, we retain that sensibility. The weekly editorial staff meeting is lunch and a movie. All the weekly status reports detail three things: what we did for work, what we did for fun, and what movies we saw. And our staff is still spread around the U.S. and Europe.

From the Eraser Home Page

Eraser is an advanced security tool for Windows which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Server 2008.

Eraser is Free software and its source code is released under GNU General Public License.

Why Use Eraser?

Most people have some data that they would rather not share with others - passwords, personal information, classified documents from work, financial records, self-written poems, the list can be continued forever.

Perhaps you have saved some of this information on your computer where it is conveniently at your reach, but when the time comes to remove the data from your hard disk, things get a bit more complicated and maintaining your privacy is not as simple as it may have seemed at first.

Your first thought may be that when you 'delete' the file, the data is gone. Not quite, when you delete a file, the operating system does not really remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference of the file from the file system table. The file remains on the disk until another file is created over it, and even after that, it might be possible to recover data by studying the magnetic fields on the disk platter surface.

Before the file is overwritten, anyone can easily retrieve it with a disk maintenance or an undelete utility. There are several problems in secure file removal, mostly caused by the use of write cache, construction of the hard disk and the use of data encoding. These problems have been taken into consideration when Eraser was designed, and because of this intuitive design and a simple user interface, you can safely and easily erase private data from your hard drive.

Small Stone Mountains
Written By Top Viking - March 2010 Edition

Large mountains are made of many small stones...

Active Members of the Team Message Board spend a considerable amount of time and ink praising the accomplishments of our Team's Big Guns and the accomplishments of our monster crunchers. I do the same thing, and will continue to do so.

It occurs to me as I study the stats and read the posts that the bedrock of the Team, is the Small Stone Cruncher. Those normal crunchers, who often go unmentioned. The regular Joe & Jane Team Member's, who quietly crunch for the team, with average results and average equipment.

They are not the super crunchers and are not the super stars of BOINC. Collectively, they are the most productive and the most  important part of our team. Small Stones are crucial to our continued success.

The NL Staff say thank you to all of the small stone crunchers. Thank you for your effort and thank you for being part of our Team.

Small stones make very large mountains...

We need your help and we need it now. So, I will be blunt. Please stop what you are doing and attach to FreeHAL@Home.

You can set up an account or attach to the FreeHAL@Home project at the following URL: http://freehal.net/freehal_at_home/

Your Invited

Our board is frequented by hundreds of Team Members, many of whom do not post messages. We are cool with that. Cool as it is, I personally invite you to join us in our ongoing conversation about the Team and about Distributed Computing Projects. The message board is upbeat and fun. The information posted, on a wide range of issues, is interesting and edifying. You can just say hello or you can post on a topic of your choice. If you need an idea, just post - Top Sent Me. I look forward to seeing you on the board.

For The Team, By The Team, With The Team

Your Newsletter has been written and published with you in mind. The Newsletter Staff asked for and then acted on comments,  suggestions and specific requests, from our fellow Team Members. Now the Team Members have opportunity to read and comment on the product of our labors, and to provide the NL Staff with important feedback. We hope this Newsletter has met or exceeded your expectations. Our continued success is contingent on your participation.

I want to personally thank the Team Newsletter Staff. You have all done and excellent job and I look forward to working with you on many Newsletters to come. This is not possible without your work and without the help you have generously given me during this transition.

Several Guest Articles have been published - In This Edition. Special thanks to: Mr. Hankey, Trigggl, Mr. Lumu, Dr. Bob & Solarwinds for submitting articles, graphics and data sets.

The Team asked for more, so it seems only fair that we turn the tables on you.  Now we need your help. Keep the comments & suggestions coming and send in links and things that you happen across, so we can include them in the Newsletter. Please consider writing a Guest Article for the April 2010 Edition. We need stuff for every edition of the Team Newsletter. Articles do not need to be long or complicated, but long complicated articles are great.

Give it some thought and jot down some words, you can finish your guest article, right after you attach to FreeHAL :)

You can contact a member of the NL Staff or send an e-mail message to:  Top Viking

Please join us in the Team Message Board Forums and let us know what you think.

Top Viking Sends, Regards...
