Home Alone? The Search Continues
By Jennifer Laing

The search for extra-terrestrial intelligence or SETI may seem like the pursuit of the proverbial 'needle in a haystack' to some, while it conjures up for others 'little green men' and scenes from the movie Contact . Adherents argue that SETI is in fact a "specialised sub-discipline" of the field of radio astronomy, which has developed from the pioneering efforts of a group of scientists in the 1960's to find evidence of artificially generated signals from space. NASA in fact maintained a SETI program based at the NASA Ames Research Center for a year, before the U.S. Congress abolished funding in 1993.

Since NASA vacated the field of SETI, the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence has largely been in the hands of the private sector. However, Executive Director of the SETI League, Dr. H. Paul Shuch, says there is much that a small-scale grassroots organisation can achieve in this arena. The SETI League was founded in 1994 by its current President, Richard C. Factor, and from humble beginnings has become the world's major privatised SETI observational program.

The question 'Are we alone?' is a compelling one. Whether you reject such a possibility out of hand or maintain an open mind, you have to admire the tenacity of those involved in grass-roots SETI research. What keeps them going is probably the satisfaction of playing a part in the search to answer a question which has dogged man for centuries. As Dr. H. Paul Shuch puts it, "It's a gamble with long odds, but low costs and high potential payoff - rather like playing the ultimate cosmic lottery."

Project of the Month: -DrBob

SETI.USA encourages its members to participate in the project of their choice. Now that we have accomplished the team's original goal of being #1 in SETI@home, credit in ALL BOINC projects is valuable to the team's future success.

Some members have asked for direction as to which projects they should allocate their resources to. Therefore we have decided to designate a “Team Project of the Month”. The chosen project typically will be one in which our team currently has a poor showing in that projects standings.

Einstein@Home has been chosen for the Team Project of the Month for May.

Our team is currently ranked 45th in BOINC standings on the project and we are hoping enough members will participate in this project to improve our position there by June 15th.

BOINC News:

First, I would like to say that "Crunch what you want" will always be an option on this team. As all of you know, our current primary goal is to take the number 1 position in BOINC overall. In order to do this we must put maximum points on the board in any project we crunch. It helps when we can concentrate on projects that give the most points, but that is not always going to happen. As a secondary goal, we are also trying to move up in position in as many projects as we can. That is partly the reason we have started the "Project of the Month" and the "Weekend Crunch-a-thons". So, with all of that in mind, here are some statistics to give you an idea of where we stand:

Quote of the Month May:

Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water.
The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken.
Although its light is wide and great,
the moon is reflected even in a puddle an inch wide.
The whole moon and the entire sky
are reflected in one dewdrop on the grass.

-Dogen (1200-1253)

Team News:

Congratulations to all of those who helped with the Project of the Month in April! We were somewhere above 120th place in WCG when we started the PoTM. We are now in 87th place. That is an awesome job of crunching, but we expect nothing less from this fine team! Hopefully we will see just as big a turnout for the PoTM this month!!
