Supporting SETI@Home and all BOINC Distributed Computing Projects

Veteran's Day

Though the holiday will have already passed by the time you read this, we here at Team SETI.USA want to wish everyone a Happy Veteran's Day.  If you know a veteran or happen to have one in your family, please shake their hand or give them a hug and thank them for their service to their nation. Without these unselfish heroes we would not have the freedoms we have become so used to.

History of Veteran's Day  -dcushing

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery. At 11:00 a.m., a color guard, made up of members from each of the military services, renders honors to America's war dead during a tradition-rich ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.  The ceremony takes place inside the Memorial Amphitheater.

Recruiting Contest  -SargeD

In an attempt to increase our teams crunching strength I am going to sponsor a recruiting contest.  The contest will run from now through December 31, 2009.  The team member who recruits the most new members to active crunching will be declared the winner.

Contest Rules:

1.  Active crunching is defined as having at least one computer crunching on any BOINC project for team SETI.USA.
2.  Inactive members who can be talked into coming back to crunching will also be counted as a new member for the purposes of this contest.
3.  Each recruiter is responsible for reporting their new recruits by username to SargeD, either by e-mail or PM.
4.  All new recruits must be reported by midnight (Central Time) on December 31, 2009 to count for the contest.
5.  The winner will be announced in the January issue of our newsletter.

The Prize:

The winner will get both of my computers crunching under their account for a period of one month.  The specs for the two computers are as follows:

SH-Cluster1 - C2D E5200 @ 2.5 GHz, with 2 ATI HD 4850 GPUs
SH-Cluster2 - C2D E6300 @ 2.0 GHz, with 1 NVidia 8600GT GPU (This GPU will most likely be upgraded to a much faster one.)

These two computers should add between 4 and 5 million to the winners account during the one month period (assuming that at least one of the GPU projects is active during that time).  So lets get out there and recruit and may the best recruiter win!

ATI Radeon™ HD 5870 -SargeD

AMD is about ready to release their next generation video card.  The HD 5870 should be a monster crunching machine with the following specs:

  • Engine clock speed: 850 MHz
  • Processing power (single precision): 2.72 TeraFLOPS
  • Processing power (double precision): 544 GigaFLOPS
  • Data fetch rate (32-bit): 272 billion fetches/sec
  • Memory clock speed: 1.2 GHz
  • Memory data rate: 4.8 Gbps
  • Memory bandwidth: 153.6 GB/sec
  • Maximum board power: 188 Watts
  • Idle board power: 27 Watts
  • 2.15 billion 40nm transistors
  • TeraScale 2 Unified Processing Architecture
    • 1600 Stream Processing Units
I do not know what the output from one of these will be, but from what I hear a couple of our team members are waiting on delivery and we should all soon know what they are capable of producing.
